Finally given up on Star Trek Online

Since playing in open beta I’ve been 50/50 on this game but today the balance finally slipped and I’ve decided to give it the boot as there is only so many times you can do the same missions with slight cosmetic changes over and over again. If you’ve ever played a mmorpg before you’ll know that there is an unavoidable amount of repetition with quests but I’ve never played a game where it is so apparent as STO.

The main type of mission you tend to get in mmorpgs is kill x amount of mobs to gain y amount of items and then repeat in a different location with the location and it’s design being the main thing that changes. Doing the same thing over and over again can be acceptable if the location and mobs vary enough to hide the fact that you are doing the same thing but this is where STO falls down badly. (more…)

Keep an eye on your local supermarket

If you’re into console gaming with a little bit of bargain hunting on the side you should keep on eye on your local supermarkets game shelves as some of the recent big releases have been sold for a shade under £30. Gears of War 2 was on offer at Sainsburys, Call of Duty: World at War at Asda and I’m sure that there were other titles there too.

Normally I preorder most games online as they tend to arrive one to two days early but if I can save myself £10 each time then Sainsburys here I come.

Rockband = fire = bad?

What do you do if the USB hub that comes with Rockband starts to burn and almost causes a house fire? You unplug it all and then plug it all back in and try again obviously or at least that’s what EA have recommended that Jim Squires over at TheBBPS.com should do. Either that or just buy a new one.

Maybe it’s about time that support staff actually start reading emails instead of just sending a standard reply.

Full story here.

Xbox Live port forwarding

I think that everybody and their dog will know this by now but if you find that you’re being dropped from Xbox Live games then it’s likely that you will need to setup port forwarding in your router. First of all give your Xbox a static IP address and then go into your router settings and forward the following ports to that address:

  • UDP 88
  • UDP 3074
  • TCP 3074

Once you have done that you should have an open NAT on your Xbox.

Apparently the beta codes for the Xbox 360 version of CoD5 have started to be sent out so keep an eye on your inboxes. Mine hasn’t arrived yet though…
